It all started in 1997: BioM was set up to strengthen the Munich biotechnology sector after Munich has won the BioRegio competition of the BMBF.
Since then
- we have acted as the cluster management organization for the biotechnology sector in Munich and Bavaria at Martinsried campus
Since then
- the Munich Biotech Cluster has grown into an outstanding location for biotechnology with
> 160 biotech companies
> 18.000 employees

The BioRegio competition was a funding initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 1997 to 2005 to strengthen biotechnology in Germany and to improve the economic implementation of results from biotechnological research.
The BioRegio competition became the blueprint for funding competence networks and competence centers.
The successes from the BioRegio Initiative continued in the <link>Leading-Edge Cluster Cluster. In 2010, Munich won with the application "m4 - Personalized Drugs and Targeted Therapies", coordinated by BioM.
