The jury of the Broermann Medical Innovation Award (BMIA) has announced this year’s recipients: Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Matthias H. Tschöp, President of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, is being honored alongside Prof. Svetlana Mojsov (The Rockefeller University, New York, USA) and Prof. Richard DiMarchi (Indiana University, Bloomington, USA) for their groundbreaking work in the treatment of obesity.
Tschöp is being honored for his groundbreaking discoveries in translational metabolic research, which, together with the work of Mojsov and DiMarchi, led to the development of the first drugs that significantly reduce body weight, improve blood sugar control, and sustainably lower the risk of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and oncological diseases. The three researchers thus laid the foundation for diabetes medications and weight-loss injections.
Titia Olivia Große Broermann, a partner in the Asklepios Clinics Group and the founder’s widow, says: “With their groundbreaking research, Mojsov, DiMarchi, and Tschöp have opened a completely new chapter in metabolic therapy and laid the foundation for today’s weight-loss injections. By honoring Prof. Svetlana Mojsov, Prof. Richard DiMarchi, and Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Matthias Tschöp, the jury is recognizing three researchers whose work has revolutionized the treatment of obesity and diabetes.”
The Broermann Medical Innovation Award is being presented for the second time and is considered one of the world’s most highly endowed medical prizes. The award, which comes with a prize of one million euros, was established in 2024 by Dr. Bernard große Broermann to promote groundbreaking discoveries that greatly benefit patients worldwide.
At its inaugural ceremony in 2025, the prestigious award went to two U.S. cancer researchers, Prof. Dr. Carl June (University of Pennsylvania) and Prof. Dr. Michel Sadelain (Columbia University). They were honored for their pioneering work in developing the revolutionary CAR-T cell therapy for cancer.
Prof. Matthias Tschöp, President of LMU Munich, commented on his award: “It is a special honor to receive the Broermann Award, together with Svetlana Mojsov and Richard DiMarchi, for the therapeutic principles and drug classes on which today’s most effective obesity medications are based. In keeping with the spirit of the award, our discoveries of bioactive GLP-1 and the weight-reducing effects of GIP and glucagon, as well as our invention of dual and triple gut hormone coagonists, are shaping the treatment of obesity and diabetes worldwide today.”
Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Matthias H. Tschöp has been President of LMU since October 2025. As a researcher and professor in the United States, as well as the founding director of the Helmholtz Diabetes Center and holder of the Chair of Metabolic Medicine at the Technical University of Munich, he has played a decisive role in advancing the development of effective obesity therapies.
The award ceremony will take place on November 17, 2026, at the Hessian State Chancellery in Wiesbaden. The award will once again be presented by Boris Rhein, Minister President of Hesse.
