LMU, TUM, the Munich university hospitals and Helmholtz Munich are joining forces in the M1 Munich Medicine Alliance. The strategic alliance aims to make Munich the leading location for cutting-edge medicine and clinical research in Europe. It is supported by the Free State of Bavaria with ten million euros a year.
With the official founding of the M1 Munich Medicine Alliance, one of the most ambitious strategic alliances in the field of university medicine has commenced operations in Munich. The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the University Hospital LMU, the University Hospital TUM and Helmholtz Munich are thus uniting their scientific and clinical excellence under a common institutional umbrella. The M1 Munich Medicine Alliance is legally anchored in the Bavarian University Hospital Act and organized as a foundation under public law.
The aim of the alliance is to significantly accelerate translation and transfer in medicine. Bavaria's Minister of Science Markus Blume sees M1 as a pioneering platform to decisively advance medical innovation, clinical studies, data utilization and artificial intelligence: “With M1, we want to make Munich the Boston of Europe.” The Free State of Bavaria is providing an additional ten million euros a year for this purpose.
Munich already occupies a leading position today: With 3,420 planned beds, around 3,500 ongoing clinical studies and as the only location with all eight German Centers for Health Research, the city has excellent conditions. Some of the M1 partners have been working together successfully for years - in collaborative research centers, clusters of excellence and numerous joint projects. The new structure raises this proven cooperation to a strategically higher level.
The M1 Munich Medicine Alliance will also become a one-stop store for international companies and scientists in the medical and pharmaceutical sector. In addition to patient care, the focus is particularly on promoting start-ups in the medical and biotechnology sector and expanding technology transfer.
M1 is intended to create a future-oriented platform that will further develop and strengthen Munich as a science and healthcare location, both nationally and internationally. The focus is particularly on innovation, patient orientation and entrepreneurial excellence.
