Munich-based Sedivention secures €2.9 million seed funding for ambulatory obesity therapy

MedTech startup Sedivention has closed a €2.9 million seed financing round. The round was led by bmp Ventures with the IBG funds. Additional investors include the strategic investment arm of a global MedTech company, existing investor High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), superangels, and Cambridge Ventures. With the fresh capital, Sedivention plans to further develop its novel ambulatory therapy for the treatment of obesity, complete product development, and generate initial clinical data as well as conduct a first-in-human study in preparation for market entry.

According to the World Obesity Federation, obesity is expected to affect more than one billion people worldwide by 2030, making it one of the greatest medical and economic challenges of our time. At the same time, the associated healthcare costs are estimated to reach up to €3.4 trillion annually. Existing treatment options face significant limitations: bariatric surgery is highly invasive and accessible to only a small proportion of patients, while pharmaceutical therapies are costly and often require lifelong use.

This is where Sedivention aims to make a difference. The company is developing a minimally invasive, one-time, ambulatory therapy based on a targeted cryo procedure. At the core of the technology is a specially developed cryo balloon catheter, used similarly to a gastroscopy procedure. Through precise cryoablation, the gastric branches of the vagus nerve responsible for hunger signaling are interrupted. The goal is to directly address disrupted hunger and satiety regulation and sustainably reduce feelings of hunger — without surgery, implants, or lifelong medication.

“Obesity is a chronic disease that requires medically effective yet gentle therapies,” says Dr. med. Ute Nollert, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Sedivention. “Our approach directly addresses the underlying disruption of hunger and satiety regulation and enables a sustainable reduction in hunger sensation — without surgery, without implants, and without lifelong medication.”

Sedivention is positioning itself in a market currently dominated by GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy. While these therapies are considered effective, they are expensive and often designed for long-term use. In contrast, Sedivention is pursuing an interventional MedTech approach based on a one-time treatment.

“We are developing a proprietary MedTech solution with the potential to redefine a global billion-dollar market through a scalable, ambulatory treatment,” says Dr.-Ing. Andreas Bröcker, co-founder and CEO of Sedivention. “From the very beginning, our technology has been designed for international scalability and addresses a market with significant growth potential that has not yet been efficiently served.”

According to the company, a functional prototype has already been successfully developed and tested. With the seed funding, Sedivention plans to finalize product development, conduct the first-in-human study, and prepare the subsequent clinical and regulatory steps.

The company’s approach has also attracted strong investor interest. “Sedivention combines medical evidence with a clearly scalable and cost-efficient MedTech approach,” says Dr. Jan Engels, Senior Investment Manager at HTGF. “The team is addressing a globally relevant disease with a technologically compelling solution.”

“Sedivention is developing an innovative and highly convincing MedTech technology to sustainably redefine obesity therapy,” says Carlos Figueredo, Investment Manager at bmp Ventures. “The solution has enormous transformative potential in one of the world’s largest healthcare markets.”
