“With the election of Matthias Tschöp, the University Council has succeeded in appointing an experienced and internationally renowned scientist, who promises visionary and successful leadership for LMU in the coming years. We are very much looking forward to working with him,” said Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Chair of the University Council, and Prof. Armin Nassehi, Chair of the Senate and Vice-Chair of the University Council.
The University Council consists of 10 external members and 10 members of the academic senate. Matthias Tschöp’s six-year term will begin on October 1, 2025.
“I warmly congratulate Matthias Tschöp on his election as the new LMU President and wish him every success. In the remaining months of my term, I will involve him in all decisions and processes to ensure a smooth transition,” said Prof. Bernd Huber, President of LMU Munich.
Bavaria’s Minister of Science, Markus Blume, commented: “Matthias Tschöp is the ideal choice for the presidency of LMU – he combines visionary leadership with outstanding research. As an internationally leading scientist in his field and a highly accomplished science manager, he has everything it takes to continue steering this university of excellence successfully into the future beyond the Huber era. He has a clear vision while also honoring LMU’s strong tradition. I am convinced: He is the right person at the right time. Congratulations on the election!”
