The Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation has awarded its 2022 Research Prize. With this award, the foundation again honors outstanding work by young researchers in the field of life sciences. This year, the call was dedicated to the topic "New approaches and results in molecular virology, infection mechanisms in viral diseases and vaccine vectors".

Since 20 years, the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation announces its Research Prize every two years. Every year, the topic relates to current areas in life sciences that are developing significantly. The competition is aimed at outstanding young researchers who can already be considered "door openers" in their respective fields. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros.

The award winner for 2022 is

  • Prof. Dr. Hauke S. Hillen, University Medical Center Göttingen and Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Natural Sciences, Göttingen.

In addition, (due to the pandemic) the award of the research prize for the year 2021 was made up. The theme of last year's call was "From basic research on bio-molecules to cells and cell systems with potential for medicine".

In 2021, 2 prizes had been awarded to

  •     Prof. Dr. Doris Hellerschmied-Jelinek, University of Duisburg-Essen, and
  •     PD Dr. Eva Huber, Technical University of Munich

Prof. Dr. Horst Domdey, Managing Director of BioM and member of the Executive Board of the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation said: "I am very happy for the awarded researchers and I am sure that they will make an important contribution to future scientific achievements. The Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation Research Award will certainly enable these young talents to take another important step on their successful path in life sciences."

About the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation

The Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation aims to promote young scientists in the field of life sciences. It is a foundation under Bavarian law. It was established in memory of Peter Engelhorn. He was a shareholder of the former pharmaceutical company Boehringer Mannheim (part of the Roche Group since 1996).

The Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation supports particularly distinguished young scientists in their research projects in the form of scholarships. This is done by granting two-year fellowships for postdoctoral researchers. In addition, a research prize is awarded every two years.
