Shanghai Ranking: TUM and LMU best universities in Germany

The "Shanghai Ranking" has rated the Technical University of Munich (TUM) as the best German university, followed by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). Worldwide, the two Munich Excellence Universities occupy positions 56 (TUM) and 57 (LMU).

The Shanghai Ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities), which is published annually since 2003, evaluates the research performance of universities worldwide on the basis of publications in important journals such as "Nature" and "Science," citation rates, and the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. The size of each institution is also considered. This year, more than 2500 institutions were analyzed and the top 1000 universities in the world were published.

TUM takes over first place from LMU

The Technical University of Munich reaches 56th place worldwide in this year's Shanghai Ranking (2021: 52nd), displacing Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from its previous top position in Germany. Compared to 2021, LMU drops from 48th to 57th place and thus out of the TOP 50. Third place is taken by the University of Heidelberg (70th) ahead of the University of Bonn (76th).

Munich among the TOP 50 in biotechnology and human biology

In the biotechnology category, the TU Munich is also ranked first in Germany and 40th worldwide. In the human biological sciences ranking, the LMU Munich is ranked fourth in Germany (41st worldwide) and the TU Munich is ranked sixth.

US universities dominate the global rankings

Harvard University tops the ranking list for the 20th year. Stanford University remains at the No. 2 seat. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) rises one position to the No. 3. Other Top 10 universities are Cambridge (4th), Berkeley (5th), Princeton (6th), Oxford (7th), Columbia (8th), Caltech (9th), and Chicago (10th).

Munich also top university location in QS ranking

In the current QS World University Ranking from June, Munich continues to rank as the best place to study in Germany: The TU Munich once again made it to the best university in Germany and still made it into the top 50 internationally with 49th place. The LMU Munich reached second place in Germany, in a global comparison it made up five places and now occupies 59th place.
