Dear reader, winter has arrived in Bavaria, there is snow on the mountains and the year 2024 is drawing to a close. Bavarian biotechnology can look back on an exciting and successful year. The inflow of capital into biotechnology is the highest for years and numerous success stories from Bavarian start-ups are boosting the scene. For example, the company Tubulis entered into a multi-million deal with the US pharmaceutical company Gilead and Eisbach Bio received the Texas Therapeutics Company Award from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Bavaria's young biotech talent is in the starting blocks, five teams have now entered our start-up incubator Munich Accelerator Life Sciences & Medicine (MAxL) and there is a record number of applications for the m4 Award 2025 pre-seed competition. Recent headlines Daiichi Sankyo starts construction of cancer drug production building Daiichi Sankyo's investments in cancer drugs in Bavaria are taking shape. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony that has now taken place to mark the start of construction of the production building in Pfaffenhofen in the presence of Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder marks a milestone: Daiichi Sankyo plans to invest around 1 billion euros over the next few years in transforming its location north of Munich into an innovation and production center. From Bavaria to the world: With the construction, Daiichi Sankyo is transferring its technology for the development and production of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) to Germany. ADCs are monoclonal antibodies that are combined with a cytotoxic agent (the pharmaceutically active ingredient) to target people with certain types of cancer. Bavaria's Minister President Dr. Markus Söder has marked the start of construction of a building at the production and development site of the Japanese pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo in Pfaffenhofen (Ilm), where these cancer drugs will be manufactured in the future. Read more Roche is laying the foundation for future diagnostics production in Germany In the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bavaria's Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder, the pharmaceutical company Roche laid the foundation stone for one of the most modern production centers for high-quality diagnostic materials in Europe on the campus of its biotechnology center in Penzberg. The company is investing more than 600 million euros for this - Roche's largest single investment in Germany. In the future, more than 450 essential ingredients for diagnostic tests for the care of patients will be produced in a highly automated and intelligent production facility in Upper Bavaria. The new production building for diagnostics in Penzberg will be one of the most modern of its kind in Europe. To this end, Roche consistently relies on the digitization and automation of manufacturing processes for faster and more efficient production. Bavarian researchers Leibniz Prizefor Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla and Daniel Rückert Prof. Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla and Prof. Daniel Rückert are honored with the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) 2025. The award is the most important research funding prize in Germany. The prize is endowed with up to 2.5 million euros. The aim of the Leibniz Program, established in 1985, is to honor outstanding top researchers, expand their research opportunities and make it easier for them to employ particularly qualified scientists in early career phases. Prof. Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla from Helmholtz Munich researches the mechanisms underlying cell plasticity, i.e. the adaptability of cells. Her focus is primarily on epigenetic processes, meaning on the cellular processes that influence the activity of genes due to environmental influences. Methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning are already widely used in medicine, including in imaging procedures - Daniel Rückert has done pioneering work here. Read more Long COVID: Helmholtz Munich researchers identify possible cause of brain effects Carsten Marr from Helmholtz Munich receives Eugen-Münch Award Researchers from Helmholtz Munich and Ludwig- Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich have identified a mechanism that may explain the neurological symptoms of Long COVID. The study shows that the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein remains in the protective layers of the brain, the meninges, and in the bone marrow of the skull for up to four years after infection. In the category "Science and Practical Application," Dr. Carsten Marr from Helmholtz Munich was honored for his groundbreaking research on AI- driven diagnostics for blood disorders. Bavarian start-ups m4 Award winner Tubulis enters into multi-million dollar deal with Gilead Tubulis, the Martinsried-based pioneer in the field of antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), announced a multi-million euro exclusive licence agreement with Gilead Sciences. The collaboration aims to develop a novel therapy for solid tumors. Tubulis received the pre-seed m4 Award coordinated by BioM in 2017. The agreement includes an upfront payment of USD 20 million and potential milestone payments of up to USD 415 million. In addition, license fees in the mid single-digit to low double-digit range were agreed. In April 2023, the company entered into a billion-euro agreement with BMS. Under the terms of the agreement, Gilead will gain access to Tubulis' proprietary platforms Tubutecan and Alco5. The companies will collaborate on the selection of the most suitable technology, with Tubulis leading the research and development efforts to develop a topoisomerase I inhibitor ADC candidate with superior biophysical properties and stability. Read more Eisbach Bio receives CPRIT funding for the development of a new cancer therapeutic Eisbach Bio GmbH received a Texas Therapeutics Company Award from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). This prestigious grant of USD 4.75 million will support the clinical development of Eisbach's first-in-class allosteric small molecule inhibitor EIS-12656 targeting ALC1, a chromatin remodeling enzyme and helicase that represents the molecular Achilles heel in a large subset of difficult-to-treat human cancers. H b m G o B h c a b a s E © i Eisbach Bio's innovative approach focuses on exploiting the unique genetic vulnerabilities present in solid tumors with deficiencies in certain DNA repair pathways. Eisbach’s proprietary ALLOS platform systematically recapitulates the tight controls that strictly regulate the activity of several key cancer-driving molecular machines. This facilitated the development of a selective drug that exploits and disrupts a specific and unique mechanism that regulates the activation of the molecular machine ALC1 during DNA repair. This disrupts genome reorganization during DNA repair, halting tumor growth and enabling a new therapeutic approach. The CPRIT grant will help support the work of Eisbach Bio during the Dose Expansion monotherapy Module 1 of its Phase I/II cancer trial, which is led by Dr. Timothy Yap of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Event review BioM Dinner 2024 At the traditional BioM end-of-year dinner, Managing Director Prof. Ralf Huss gave a summary of Bavarian biotechnology and an outlook on BioM's upcoming activities. In her keynote speech, Prof. Eva-Maria Kern, President of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, pointed out the tasks of science in times of change, while State Secretary Tobias Gotthardt emphasized Bavaria's leading position as a biotechnology location.
