Recent headlines Fraunhofer ITMP: topping-out ceremony for the new site of Immunology, Infection, and Pandemic Research (IIP) in Penzberg Following the completion of the structural work, the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology (ITMP) celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the new building at the IIP Center for Immunology, Infection, and Pandemic Research in Penzberg. With this, the ITMP marks another milestone for Bavaria as a hub for science and pharmaceuticals. Following the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2025, the Fraunhofer ITMP celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the new building in Penzberg together with the participating contractors. On a plot of land measuring approximately 9,000 m², located in the immediate vicinity of Roche’s Center of Excellence for Life Sciences, a unique hub of infectious disease expertise is taking shape in the fields of analytics, medicine, bacteriology, virology, and protein biotechnology. The Penzberg site is expected to create jobs for 50 employees, who will contribute to strengthening the regional and national research landscape. With five stories the building will offer state-of-the-art laboratories with internationally competitive infrastructure, including high-throughput technologies and a biobank. The new building is being financed by a grant totaling 21 million euros, shared between the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria. The move into the building is scheduled for spring 2028. Read more r e f o h n u a r F © HMNC Brain Health secures USD 50 million and enters into a strategic partnership with MEDICE HMNC Brain Health has successfully completed the first closing of its USD 50 million Series B funding round. The clinical neurobiotechnology company plans to use the capital to advance the development of its portfolio, particularly the Ketabon (KET01) and Nelivabon (BH- 200) programs. MEDICE – The Health Family is participating in the funding round as the lead investor. The healthcare company, which specializes in mental health, is among the market leaders in the ADHD sector in several European countries. In addition, existing investor The Maschmeyer Group also participated. The funds are to be used primarily for the late-stage clinical development of the two drug candidates as well as for the preparation of the Phase III programs. The collaboration combines HMNC’s neuroscience development expertise and precision medicine capabilities with MEDICE’s established European commercialization infrastructure in the field of mental health. Both companies aim to make innovative therapeutic approaches for depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders available to patients more quickly. Recent headlines NUCLIDIUM expands its Series B extension to EUR 115 million The radiopharmaceutical company NUCLIDIUM AG has raised an additional EUR 28.4 million in its Series B financing round. The company plans to use the capital to advance the clinical development of its copper-based radiotheranostics, expand global production capacity for diagnostics and therapeutics, and develop new targets for preclinical programs. NUCLIDIUM, with sites in Basel and Munich, has announced the completion of an oversubscribed extension of its Series B financing round. With an additional CHF 26 million (approx. EUR 28.4 million), the total financing volume rises to CHF 105 million (approx. EUR 115 million). The new 36 EUR million facility of the Max von Pettenkofer Institute will facilitate the prevention and more efficient treatment of infectious diseases using all modern diagnostic techniques. Bavarian start-ups BugSense receives EXIST funding for rapid UTI diagnostics Munich-based start-up BugSense Diagnostics has secured EUR 1.23 million through the EXIST Research Transfer funding programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE). Over the next two years, the m4 Award winner of 2023 will use the funding to further develop its paper-based point-of-care platform, expand its team, validate the technology, and advance it towards clinical application for rapid infection diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance detection. BugSense is developing a handheld, paper-based diagnostic system that identifies bacterial pathogens and antibiotic resistance directly at the point of care, eliminating the need for sample transport and lengthy laboratory workflows. By combining pathogen identification and antibiotic resistance testing in a single step, the technology aims to deliver same-day results while reducing testing time, costs, logistical effort, and unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions. Read more smartbax expands funding to EUR 6.3 million for the development of antibiotics against multidrug-resistant bacteria Munich-based m4 Award winner smartbax has successfully expanded its pre-Series A funding round to a total of EUR 6.3 million. With the additional capital, biotech company smartbax plans to further develop its leading antibiotic program through the submission of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application, while also expanding its proprietary pipeline of innovative drug candidates against multidrug-resistant bacteria. e s n e S g u B © . y a b a x P © i Following the first closing of its funding round last year, which raised EUR 4.7 million, smartbax has now secured additional funding from a Frankfurt-based single-family office. This brings the total amount of its Pre-Series A funding to EUR 6.3 million. In addition to the new investor, smartbax is supported by a consortium of investors consisting of Anobis Asset, Bayern Kapital, Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund (BIVF), HTGF – High-Tech Gründerfonds and UnternehmerTUM Funding for Innovators. With the additional funding, smartbax intends to further develop its most advanced antibiotic program through to IND filing. The drug candidate, which was recently in-licensed from AiCuris, targets a step in the biosynthesis of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) – a key component of the outer membrane of Gram- negative bacteria – that has not yet been exploited therapeutically. Bavarian start-ups m4 Award winner Mallia secures EUR 3 million financing to accelerate commercial expansion of the 8T3 Essentials Line Mallia Innovations GmbH, strategically driving the development and commercialization of biopharmaceutical therapies targeting hair loss and wound healing as well as cosmetic applications for hair growth, announced the successful completion of a EUR 3 million financing round. The proceeds will be invested primarily in its subsidiary Mallia Aesthetics GmbH to accelerate the commercial scale-up of the two hormone-free products in the 8T3 Essentials line across Europe. Read more CollimateHealth secures EUR 6 million oversubscribed seed financing for clinically scalable microbeam radiation therapy for cancer patients Munich-based CollimateHealth has closed an oversubscribed EUR 6 million seed financing round to advance its clinically scalable microbeam radiation therapy, a radically new biological approach to cancer treatment. The round was significantly oversubscribed and supported by renowned life sciences investors including VP Venture Partners, Positron, XISTA Science Ventures, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and caesar. With the financing, the company aims to build the first clinical prototype, generate preclinical data and prepare the path toward first-in-human use within the next three years. . h t l a e H e t a m i l l o C © CollimateHealth is developing the first clinically scalable microbeam radiation therapy for oncology treatments. Unlike conventional radiation therapy, which typically relies on broad, low-dose beams and can cause significant side effects, microbeam radiation therapy uses bundled, extremely narrow beams in the micrometre range at a much higher dose. Tumors treated with microbeams undergo an especially intense form of cell death that increases antigen presentation and thereby triggers an immune response against cancer cells – even beyond the primarily irradiated area. Bavarian start-ups TigerShark Science celebrates a double success: The Bavarian Start-up Award and victory in the Northern Bavaria Business Plan Competition. d n a e c n e c S i k r a h S r e g T © i A major success for the Würzburg-based biotech start-up TigerShark Science: The company has been awarded the 2026 Bavarian Start-up Prize in the ‘Start-up’ category. The team also secured first place in BayStartUP’s 2026 Northern Bavaria Business Plan Competition. Using its innovative technology, TigerShark Science, based in Würzburg, cultivates human skin models in the laboratory, thereby providing realistic testing systems for pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies. The models replicate the structure of human skin with exceptional accuracy, include additional features such as hair, and remain stable for several weeks. The artificial human skin models are designed to help pharmaceutical, biotech and cosmetics companies test active ingredients more precisely and efficiently. This is intended to shorten development times, reduce costs and help minimise animal testing. TigerShark Science is currently preparing a funding round and is seeking investors who would like to support the company on its path to further growth. Read more Munich-based Sedivention secures EUR 2.9 million seed funding for ambulatory obesity therapy MedTech startup Sedivention has closed a EUR 2.9 million seed financing round. The round was led by bmp Ventures with the IBG funds. Additional investors include the strategic investment arm of a global MedTech company, existing investor High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), superangels, and Cambridge Ventures. With the fresh capital, Sedivention plans to further develop its novel ambulatory therapy for the treatment of obesity, complete product development, and generate initial clinical data as well as conduct a first-in-human study in preparation for market entry. According to the World Obesity Federation, obesity is expected to affect more than one billion people worldwide by 2030, making it one of the greatest medical and economic challenges of our time. This is where Sedivention aims to make a difference. The company is developing a minimally invasive, one-time, ambulatory therapy based on a targeted cryo procedure. At the core of the technology is a specially developed cryo balloon catheter, used similarly to a gastroscopy procedure. Bavarian start-ups NanoStruct secures EUR 2.6 million in seed funding for fast sensor chip- based food safety The Würzburg-based deep-tech start- up NanoStruct has closed a EUR 2.6 million seed financing round. The lead investors are HTGF, Bayern Kapital, and the Auxxo Female Catalyst Fund. NanoStruct’s technology reduces the detection time for dangerous pathogens such as Listeria and Salmonella in food from 2–3 days to just a few hours – through nanostructured sensor chips and AI. NanoStruct GmbH was founded by Dr. Henriette Maaß, Enno Schatz, and Kai Leibfried. The start-up develops nanostructured sensor chips for the rapid identification of dangerous pathogens in food within just a few hours. With this capital, the company aims to advance the clinical development of its lead candidate and further scale its platform for microbiome-based therapies. mbiomics GmbH has completed the third closing of its Series A financing round, raising EUR 12 million and bringing the total to EUR 30 million. Investors include existing backers such as MIG Fonds and Bayern Kapital. With the additional funding, the company plans to further strengthen its preclinical data packages in preparation for an IND filing, as well as accelerate GMP development and manufacturing. A key focus is the preparation of the clinical evaluation of its lead candidate MBX-116, which is being developed as a co-therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors for advanced melanoma. Bavarian start-ups TUM develops affordable high-tech glove for people with hand paralysis Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a soft, pneumatic hand exoskeleton that can help people with paralysis regain the ability to grasp objects. Combining intelligent control with a low-cost design, the so-called Soft Hand Exoskeleton could enable people with neurological disorders or injuries to regain greater independence in their daily lives. The „Soft-Hand-Exosceleton“is equipped with air cushions that are inflated through 13 tubes. This allows individual fingers to bend and extend while also supporting wrist movement. As a result, the system assists precisely those hand movements required to securely grasp and hold everyday objects such as a glass, a plate or cutlery. To ensure the fabric glove responds at the right moment, sensors measure muscle activity in the forearm. Using machine learning, the system can reliably detect when a person intends to grasp an object. Additional motion sensors ensure that the grip remains closed while the object is being carried. According to the researchers, the system detects the user’s intention to grasp with an accuracy of 97 percent. Bavarian biotech worldwide Strengthening Europe’s innovation power: BioM and BIOGA reinforce their partnership BioM, the Bavarian biotechnology cluster organization, and BIOGA, the life sciences cluster of the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during BayOConnect 2026 in Munich. The agreement establishes the foundation for an innovation-driven collaboration between the two organizations, with the aim of further connecting the life sciences ecosystems of Bavaria and Galicia. The MoU formalizes and reinforces a collaboration that has already been in place for several years. Bavarian researchers Munich researchers develop CRISPR method to control protein production in cells A research team led by Stefan H. Stricker, professor of Epigenetic Engineering at the Biomedical Center of LMU Munich and group leader at Helmholtz Munich, together with international partners, has developed a new CRISPR- based method that enables the targeted control of protein production in cells. The findings have been published in the journal Science. The new method, called TAPIR (Targeted Activation of Protein Translation), allows researchers to increase the activity of ribosomal genes and thereby enhance the production of ribosomal RNA (rRNA). This plays a key role in protein synthesis and determines whether cells divide, differentiate, or retain their stem cell properties. The findings could be particularly relevant for diseases associated with impaired ribosome function. These include ribosomopathies such as Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare congenital disorder that causes craniofacial malformations. The research team also observed that similar mechanisms play a role in pancreatic cancer. Tumor cells appear to exploit elevated rRNA production to sustain their rapid growth. Read more TUM researchers develop electrically controlled DNA origami switch The development of programmable molecular machines has taken an important step forward. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed an exceptionally reliable and stable DNA origami switch that can be controlled electrically and used to regulate molecular functions. The nanoswitch remained fully functional over several hundred thousand switching cycles. Several researchers from the Cluster of Excellence BioSysteM played a key role in the project. k c o t s r e t t u h S © M U T / t r e k c E d i r t s A © The switch is based on DNA origami, a technique in which DNA strands are folded into precisely defined nanoscale structures. Using this approach, the team designed a DNA switch with two stable states. A short electrical pulse is sufficient to change the structure from one state to the other within milliseconds. Once switched, it remains in its new position without requiring any further energy input. The research team has already demonstrated two possible applications. In one experimental setup, the switch was coupled to gold nanorods, allowing an optical signal to be switched on and off depending on the position of the DNA switch. In a second experiment, the researchers used the switch to alternately expose or block a binding site for other DNA strands. This enabled them to control the speed of the binding process. Bavarian researchers Three ERC Proof of Concept Grants awarded to FAU: AI for disease detection, biocompatible electrodes and nanoparticle-based antibiotics Major success: Three researchers from Friedrich- Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) have been awarded Proof of Concept (PoC) Grants by the European Research Council (ERC). Each grant provides EUR 150,000 to evaluate the commercial and societal potential of their research projects. Prof. Bernhard Kainz aims to enable cooperating AI models to identify patterns in patient data associated with specific diseases. Prof. Alessandro Del Vecchio is developing biocompatible electrodes designed to restore some motor function to people with spinal cord injuries. The European Research Council's Proof of Concept (PoC) Grant scheme is aimed at researchers who already hold an ERC Grant and wish to further develop results from an ongoing or completed ERC-funded project beyond basic research. The funding is intended to explore the commercial or societal potential of research results. Each PoC Grant provides EUR 150,000 over a period of 18 months. Read more LMU Munich receives ERC Proof-of-Concept Grant for data-driven nanocarrier development of RNA drugs Olivia Merkel, Professor of Drug Delivery in the Department of Pharmacy at Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität Munich, has received a Proof-of-Concept Grant from the European Research Council, building on findings from her ERC Consolidator Grant. The new ALINA platform is designed to accelerate the development of RNA therapeutics and conserve resources, and will serve as a blueprint for the broader adoption of data-driven nanocarrier development for RNA therapeutics. U M L © LMU pharmacologist Olivia Merkel has thus been awarded a grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the fourth time. She researches novel nanocarrier systems for the targeted local delivery of drugs. Her work focuses on the therapeutic use of RNA molecules that silence genes involved in disease pathogenesis in specific cell types or that can express therapeutic genes. Although these so-called RNA therapeutics hold enormous potential, their development is hindered by slow, expensive, Edisonian nanocarrier development approaches. Bavarian researchers LMU president Tschöp receives prestigious international science award The jury of the Broermann Medical Innovation Award (BMIA) has announced this year’s recipients: Prof. Matthias H. Tschöp, President of Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität Munich, is being honored alongside Prof. Svetlana Mojsov (The Rockefeller University, New York, USA) and Prof. Richard DiMarchi (Indiana University, Bloomington, USA) for their groundbreaking work in the treatment of obesity. The prize is endowed with a research grant of EUR 300,000 and recognizes his pioneering work in enabling non-invasive and continuous monitoring of human biology. Ntziachristos is Director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) and Director of Bioengineering at Helmholtz Munich, Chair of Biological Imaging at the Technical University of Munich, and co-founder of Spear. Event Review – BayOConnect 2026 For two days, Munich was the meeting place for European representatives from academia, industry, start-ups, the investment sector, and politics, who gathered to discuss the latest developments in biotechnology and medicine and to forge new partnerships aimed at bringing innovations to market more quickly. With around 450 participants, 425 partnering meetings, 6 start- up pitches, 19 posters, and 40 sponsors, exhibitors, and partners, BayOConnect once again established itself as one of Europe’s most important networking platforms for biotechnology. Under the theme “Driving biotech in Europe” leading players of the ecosystem discussed how technological sovereignty, access to capital, and regulatory frameworks interact to bring innovations to market more quickly. The topic “Innovation across TechBio” focused on the next generation of innovations: At the intersection of biotechnology, AI, and digital technologies, it was demonstrated how new approaches are accelerating the development and scaling of new products.
