Dear reader, as you can see on our cover photo, in autumn farmers in the Alps bring their cattle back from the mountain pastures to the stables in the valley where they spend the winter. An exciting tradition that attracts numerous visitors to the mountains every year. But there is also a lot of movement in the Bavarian biotech scene in autumn. Bavarian researchers received numerous awards, companies are making plenty of positive headlines and young people showed great interest in the industry at the Biotech & Pharma Career Day 2024. The German Startup Monitor 2024 reports: Bavaria leads Germany in terms of the number of new start-ups, the healthcare sector has increased compared to the previous year and the medical & healthcare sector is rated as the most important future industry with enormous innovation potential. Your BioM team Recent headlines Bruker has acquired Munich-based Dynamic Biosensors Bruker Corporation strengthens its portfolio with the acquisition of Munich-based Dynamic Biosensors GmbH. The company develops technologies for analyzing molecular interactions, which will now be combined with Bruker's high-performance SPR systems. Bruker Corporation has announced the acquisition of Munich-based Dynamic Biosensors GmbH, a pioneer in the development of biosensors. With this acquisition, Bruker will expand its biophysical product portfolio with advanced technologies for analyzing molecular and cellular interactions. Recent headlines Pentixapharm from Würzburg/Berlin sets price range for IPO Pentixapharm Holding AG, focused on the development of first-in-class radiopharmaceuticals, has announced the price range for its IPO on the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The proceeds are intended to support the further development of the theranostics product pipeline, including two lead candidates that have shown promising results in clinical trials. Pentixapharm Holding AG has announced the price range for its upcoming IPO. This is between EUR 4.70 and EUR 6.00 per share. A total of up to 3.9 million new shares will be offered. Pentixapharm, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of innovative radiopharmaceuticals, aims with the IPO to secure fresh capital for clinical development and strategic expansion. Pentixapharm's clinical pipeline includes PentixaTher, an yttrium-90-based therapeutic for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and PentixaFor, a gallium-68-based companion diagnostic. Clinical trials for both compounds have already started with a dose-finding study for PentixaTher and a Phase III registration study for PentixaFor in marginal zone lymphoma in Europe. Read more Kurma Partners raises EUR 140 million in the first closing of its Biofund IV Paris and Munich-based venture capitalist Kurma Partners has reached the first closing of its Biofund IV with EUR 140 million. Kurma's goal is to raise a total of EUR 250 million for its latest and largest venture capital fund to date by its final close in 2025. Biofund IV is planning 16 to 20 new investments, of which the first three have already been made. As with its predecessor funds, the focus is on companies developing innovative therapeutics. Recent headlines New Max Planck Center for Physics and Medicine opened in Erlangen The grand opening of the Max Planck Center for Physics and Medicine (MPZPM) in Erlangen took place on September 20, 2024, with around 120 invited guests, including Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder, Nobel Prize winners and leading scientists. The interdisciplinary center aims to develop new approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases such as cancer. M P Z P M / s h c u F t r u K © The Max Planck Center for Physics and Medicine (MPZPM) is the result of a close cooperation between the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL), the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the University Hospital Erlangen (UKER). The aim of the center is to further dissolve the boundaries between physics and medicine and to research the physical basis of biological processes and diseases. This could lead to relevant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases such as cancer. The MPZPM offers around 6,000 square meters of space for 180 scientists and is directly integrated into the campus of the University Hospital to ensure a direct exchange between research and clinical practice. Read more Formycon receives EU approval for FYB202/Otulfi® for the treatment of inflammatory diseases Formycon AG from Martinsried near Munich and its commercialization partner Fresenius Kabi have received approval from the European Commission for the biosimilar FYB202 (Otulfi®) for the treatment of severe inflammatory diseases. The biosimilar is based on the active ingredient ustekinumab, which is used to treat diseases such as psoriasis and Crohn's disease. y a b a x P © i With the market approval of FYB202, a further treatment option is now available that can be used as an alternative to existing therapies. Ustekinumab is already an established active ingredient in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases. The approval of FYB202 expands the range of therapies available to patients in the European Union, particularly in terms of potentially wider availability. Ustekinumab is a human monoclonal antibody that targets the cytokines interleukin-12 and interleukin- 23, which play a central role in inflammatory and immune responses. The European Commission granted marketing authorization for FYB202 (Otulfi®), a biosimilar to Stelara®, after the EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) issued a positive recommendation in July 2024. US delegation visited BioM and IZB In October, we were honored to welcome a distinguished U.S. delegation to the IZB - Innovation and Start-up Center Biotechnology - and BioM around Dr. Patricia Gruber, Science and Technology Adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State, along with Linda Johnson from the U.S. Embassy in Berlin and Kristina Mader from the U.S. Consulate General in Munich. During our discussions, we covered a range of crucial topics: • The strength of the local network at the Martinsried / Munich / Bavarian biotech ecosystem • The origins of spin-offs, with a significant focus on those emerging from academia • The challenges and opportunities for Bavarian start-ups in finding (U.S.) investors • Success stories from Bavarian companies such as Tubulis and CatalYm, which have both attracted U.S. investors The visit was rounded off with a tour of the BioM start-up incubator MAxL. Bavarian Researchers Helmholtz Munich: new approach to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis Researchers from Helmholtz Munich in cooperation with an international team have discovered a key mechanism that contributes to the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. This could be a target for future diagnostic and therapeutic methods for this serious and usually chronic disease. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a rare and progressive disease in which the lung tissue becomes scarred. Functional lung tissue is increasingly remodelled into non-functional connective tissue. o t o h p k c o t S i © Researchers from Helmholtz Munich, together with an international team, have now discovered a process that reduces the regenerative capacity of lung stem cells in pulmonary fibrosis. Earlier studies by the same research team had already shown this: If more so-called extracellular vesicles are released, this promotes the progression of pulmonary fibrosis. The scientists have now discovered that extracellular vesicles containing the protein Secreted Frizzled- Related Protein 1 (SFRP1) accumulate during active fibrosis. This impairs the regenerative capacity of the lung stem cells. The small particles could therefore serve as biomarkers for the early detection of pulmonary fibrosis. Read more Antibody conjugate shows huge progress in breast cancer treatment An international team of researchers led by Prof. Nadia Harbeck has made a significant advance in breast cancer treatment. The new antibody conjugate "Trastuzumab Deruxtecan" showed promising results in a clinical trial in patients with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer. The treatment significantly extends survival time and offers new hope for patients. The results were published in Nature Medicine. Patients with so-called advanced HER2-positive breast cancer very often develop metastases in the brain. In this case, their chances of surviving for years are very slim, as previous therapies – surgery and radiotherapy – only help for a short time. Now an international team of researchers co-led by Prof. Nadia Harbeck, Director of the Breast Cancer Centre at LMU Hospital, has tested a new drug in a clinical trial. ‘With fantastic results,’ says the cancer doctor. According to the findings to date, the survival time has been significantly extended. The study results were published in the renowned journal Nature Medicine. Bavarian researchers FAU scientist receives Life Sciences Bridge Award for research on T cell immune response Whether a killer T cell in our immune system protects or harms us depends on which antigen it binds to with its typical receptor. However, it is largely unknown which antigens these receptors recognize, especially in cancer and autoimmune diseases, but also in many infections. PD Dr. Kilian Schober and his research group at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) are working to shed light on this darkness - and have now been awarded a Life Sciences Bridge Award worth 100,000 euros by the Aventis Foundation. Kilian Schober (Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) © Uwe Dettmar On their patrols through the body, every cytotoxic T cell mainly encounters self-peptides from healthy cells – and must find the foreign antigen that matches its specific receptor in the midst of these so that it does not inadvertently destroy healthy cells. The researcher uses two technologies that allow him to advance into new dimensions of understanding T cell responses: genome editing using CRISPR/Cas and single-cell RNA sequencing. With the latter, he can sequence all the active genes of a single T cell, including those of its receptor, and make precise genetic modifications to the receptor. In this way, a library of T cell receptors including validated epitopes is built up in order to find the epitopes that match the T cell receptor. Read more Prof. Anette-Gabriele Ziegler awarded prestigious Rachmiel Levine Medal Prof. Anette-Gabriele Ziegler, Director of the Helmholtz Munich Institute for Diabetes Research, was awarded the 2024 Rachmiel Levine Medal by City of Hope – a prominent biomedical research and treatment institution in the United States, especially recognized for its work in cancer, diabetes, and other life- threatening diseases. The award was presented during the Rachmiel Levine-Arthur Riggs Diabetes Research Symposium, hosted at the City of Hope Research Center, USA. As part of the event, Prof. Ziegler delivered an award lecture titled "Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity and Implications for Prevention of Type 1 Diabetes", where she shared key insights from her research on autoimmune processes leading to type 1 diabetes and potential prevention strategies. Bavarian start-ups Eisbach starts phase I/II trial of EIS-12656 in advanced solid tumours: first patient treated Eisbach Bio GmbH, a privately held clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on cancer medicines leveraging synthetic lethality, has treated the first patient in Module 1 of the ongoing Phase I/II MATCH trial (NCT06525298) with the ALC1 inhibitor EIS-12656. The goal of the study is to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and initial clinical efficacy of the allosteric ALC1 inhibitor in monotherapy. The study is being conducted at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and is supported by an investment from the Cancer Focus Fund, a dedicated investment fund in collaboration with MD Anderson. EIS-12656 is a novel, selective, potent, orally administered, brain-penetrant inhibitor of chromatin helicase ALC1 (CHD1L), a key component in DNA damage and genome repair mechanisms. The drug inhibits ALC1 via allosteric mechanisms and thus suppresses the cancer-relevant genome reorganization triggered by DNA damage. Preclinical data show rapid tumor growth inhibition, high bioavailability and excellent tolerability of EIS-12656. Read more cureVision receives 2nd main prize of the Bavaria 2024 Innovation Award Wound analysis specialist cureVision GmbH secured the 2nd main prize at this year's Bavaria 2024 Innovation Awards, following Orbem GmbH from Munich in 1st place. cureVision is developing an AI-supported solution to improve the care of chronic wounds. The start-up’s solution consists of disinfectable hardware with software and interfaces. This is suitable for 3D wound analysis and documentation. The length, width and area of the wound are measured and the wound depth is automatically recognized with the help of artificial intelligence. The AI also recognizes granulation, fibrin and necrosis. Photo documentation is also included in the automatically generated wound report. cureVision already took 2nd place in the Digital Health Award presented by Novartis Germany in 2023. The Bavarian Innovation Award was launched in 2012 as a joint initiative of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Association of Bavarian Chambers of Industry and Commerce and the Association of Bavarian Chambers of Crafts and Trades and is awarded every two years. Read more IRUBIS secures Pre-Series A funding to accelerate bioprocess development e f i L O X © Munich-based biotech startup IRUBIS, which is developing a state-of-the-art real-time solution for bioprocess monitoring, has successfully closed a Pre-Series A financing round. IRUBIS will use the funds to further develop its innovative solution Monipa, which is tailored to make bioprocesses more efficient and precise. IRUBIS’ innovative process analytical technology (PAT), Monipa, is based on mid-infrared spectroscopy. It serves as a user-friendly and powerful tool for the prediction of critical quality attributes (CQAs) and critical process parameters (CPPs) in upstream and downstream bioprocesses.
