A successful start - the first BioEntrepreneurship Summit

Thank you for being part of the BioEntrepreneurship 2017!

The first BioEntrepreneurship Summit 2017 took place on October 10/11, 2017 in Munich, bringing together all relevant stakeholders of the bioentrepreneurial and health tech ecosystems. From students and scientists in the life sciences, pre-seed teams and experienced life science entrepreneurs to supporters, investors and industry leaders – about 200 participants joined the successful event to learn, meet and expand the network.

With 45 speakers from academia, industry, supporting agencies and investment firms, the agenda showed a varied range of topics and perspectives.

“Why and how I became an bioentrepreneur” was one of the big topics of the two-day event. Leading life science experts shared their scientific as well as their entrepreneurial expertise in inspiring talks and talked about their experiences as bioentrepreneurs. In addition, funders represented by experienced investors and business angels showed their point of view and encouraged innovative start-ups to contact them with a validated business idea. How to validate such a business model , how to start a business and how to get supported could be learned in the parallel workshops sessions.

“Being the first time,  the BioEntrepreneurship Summit was a startup event in itself for us - so it was really great that all players of the ecosystem contributed to make it a success.” comments Christina Enke-Stolle, Senior Manager Startups & Funding at BioM. Dr. Petra Burgstaller, also Senior Manager Startups & Funding at BioM, adds: “We are planning to host the event every other year, so we are already looking forward to the BioEntrepreneurship Summit 2019 and hope to be able to win such inspirational speakers next time, too.”

To feel real-world competition, 13 pre-seed teams and young start-ups presented their ventures in short pitches trying to convince the audience. All participants had been given virtual funds to invest in the pitching teams and select the best business idea. The four winner teams Ergotrics (1st), CytoSwith (2nd), IRUBIS and FerroSens (both 3rd) were not only be happy to be selected but also got valuable vouchers for coachings and trainings:
1st place: initial consultation by the law firm Vossius & Partner and a consultation by Dentons Europe LLP
2nd place: branding / frontend consulting by Studio LSC, a specialist in life science communication
3rd place: free admission for 2 people to a BioM event of choice

A special highlight of the event was the announcement of the winners of this year’s m4 Award. The Bavarian pre-seed grant m4 Award supports academic research projects with spin-off potential in medical biotechnology. You will find the five winner teams including descriptions of their projects here: winners_m4Award2017.

We are very pleased with the success of our event and would like to thank all speakers, sponsors and participants for their support.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the BioEntrepreneurship Summit 2019.
