Top Ten of European Biopharma Clusters

A recent ranking of the journal Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News lists Germany at position one of the European biopharma clusters. The reason for Germany’s excellent rating are its two powerhouses North-Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria. With 348 resp. 380 companies, these two regions are home to about half of Germany’s biopharma enterprises. The ranking also considered the number of jobs, the amount of venture capital invested, the amount of European funding and the number of patents in the area of biotechnology as well as pharmaceutics.

Especially the number of patents and jobs distinguished Germany from the runner-up United Kingdom with its centers in East England and Scotland. On position three follows France, which has a strong biocluster in Paris, but in total less companies and EU-funding than Germany.
